To transfer web pages from your computer to a web server you need an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program.

There are many freeware and shareware programs available to download from the Internet. One of the most popular being CuteFTP. The following notes explain how to get started with this program, however the procedures described and the program's interface will be similar for any other FTP application which you may decide to use instead.

As soon as the program has launched the Site Manager window should appear. The Site Manager enables the creation of a new site connection. If you cannot see it, select File > Site Manager from the menu bar.

Click New and type in a name for your site, then enter the following details:

FTP Host Address: - The FTP server address, for example, www.yoursite.co.uk or ftp.yoursite.co.uk. Do not type in ftp:// or http:// before the address.

FTP site User Name and Password: - The UserID and password provided by your Service Provider. Both are case sensitive.

FTP site connection port: - The port required to establish a connection. This is usually 21.

Login Type:- Select Normal whenever a username and password is required.

After entering these details click Connect to establish a connection. You will then see a screen similar to the one below:

The left panel is used to find files located on your computer and the panel on the right displays the files and directories on the server. To upload a file, select it in the left panel and click on the upload button or just drag and drop the file.
